dc.description.abstract This paper briefly highlights the challenges facing Botswana today giving particular attention to the changing role of the state and the need to improve the regulatory environment in order to promote competition among all economic agents and increase productivity. The topical issue of privatisation is briefly touched upon. The paper covers recent economic developments in Botswana, international competitiveness and the search for new engines of growth and the changing role of the state in the economy. en_US
